Plan Your Line Painting Project
- Assess the current condition of the parking lot: Inspect the surface for any cracks, potholes, or other damage that needs to be repaired before painting can begin.
- If your parking lot is just being re-painted and the lines are visible you can skip the next step.
- Measure the parking lot: Determine the dimensions of the lot and mark out the locations for the parking spaces, handicapped spaces, and other markings.
- Determine the type of paint to use and how much traffic paint you will need: There are different types of paint available for parking lot painting, including water-based, oil-based. Each type has its own set of benefits and drawbacks, so it’s important to choose the one that best suits the needs of the specific parking lot. For the purposes of this guide we will keep it simple. Waterborne is gaining popularity because it is easy to clean, and is environmentally friendly, and usually cheaper than solvent based paints. Solvent paints can be applied in colder weather, and are a bit easier to work with. Both options will do the job, and it ultimately will come down to preference.
- You will also want to determine if you want to paint your parking stalls with white traffic paint, or yellow, and calculate accordingly.
- Assess the message markings and symbols you will need to paint ie handicap symbols, visitor parking, fire lane, arrows etc. For handicap symbols you will need to purchase some blue traffic paint, and a stencil to quickly and accurately paint the symbol. Parking lot stencils also come in handy for any messages you want to paint. Roadly has any parking lot stencil you would possibly need for your job, and can also make custom message or logo stencils.
- Prepare the surface: This includes sweeping, cleaning and/or power washing the surface, filling any cracks or potholes. Sweeping is the only required preparation prior to painting, however crack filling, seal coating, and power washing can lengthen the life of your lot, and improve its appearance.

Average size of a standard parking stall is 5.5m in length, and 2.6m wide.
Make sure to use a measuring tape and chalk line to layout each stall before painting to ensure straight lines are painted, and stall widths are consistent.
Painting Parking Lot Lines
Step 1: Fill the paint reservoir
Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for the proper type and amount of paint to use in the machine’s reservoir. It is good practice to use a pail screen so only screened material is sucked into the lines.
Step 2: Adjust the machine settings
Consult the machine’s manual for proper settings for your specific task. Adjust the width of the line, the paint flow rate, and the pressure according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Step 3: Test the machine
Before beginning the actual line striping, test the machine on a small, inconspicuous area to make sure the paint is flowing properly and the lines are straight. Make any necessary adjustments.
Step 4: Begin line striping
Start the machine and begin striping the lines on the surface. Hold the machine steady and move at a steady pace to ensure straight lines. Take care to overlap each pass slightly to ensure even coverage.
Pro Tip: Be sure to start painting in motion. Make sure the machine is moving forward before pulling the paint trigger. This will eliminate mushrooming on the start of your line.
For messages or symbols, lay the stencil on the ground, and remove the paint gun from the machine, you will be spraying these by hand. Spray over the stencil with steady even speed strokes. Remove the stencil and allow paint to dry. Dry times vary depending on the type of paint you use. For most quick dry paint the lines can be driven on in under 10 minutes.
Step 5: Clean up
After finishing the line striping, turn off the machine and clean it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. It is good practice to flush the lines after using for the day. Remove any masking tape and dispose of any remaining paint properly.
Note: Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and safety guidelines when using a line striping machine. It is also important to be aware of the safety precautions while working with paint and chemicals.
